“God promises to come to His people to restore justice, to purify hearts, and to bring healing. Over 400 years before Jesus came, God spoke to a man named Malachi. His message was about preparing for God to come to our world. Today, we will see that God is still in charge and at work in the world preparing the way for a relationship with us.

We discovered that the gift of salvation by grace comes through faith in Christ.

We will discover that God desires a relationship with us. It means living a life of love for God and others.

2:17—3:5      1. The Dispute: Malachi 2:17—3:5,

2:17, You have wearied the LORD with your words. "How have we wearied him?" you ask.  y saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them" or "Where is the God of justice?"

Malachi 3:1-5, 1, "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.  2, But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap.  3, He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,          4, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years." 5, So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty.

Commentary: Malachi 2:17-3:6, God was tired of the way the people had cynically twisted his truths. He would punish those who insisted that because God was silent, he approved of their actions or at least would never punish them. God would also punish those who professed a counterfeit faith while acting sinfully (see 3:5)

2. Hope for the faithful: Malachi 3:16—4:5

16.   Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name.

17.   "They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him.

18.   And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

Malachi: 4:1-5

2. Hope for the faithful:

  1. "Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire," says the LORD Almighty. "Not a root or a branch will be left to them. 2. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.  3. Then you will trample down the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do these things," says the LORD Almighty. 4. "Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel. 5.  "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.

Commentary: Malachi4:1-5, The prophet reminded those who honored God that when they spoke, God heard them. He also assured them of their place in Gods book of remembrance, and Gods special relationship to them. Malachi predicted that the wicked and the righteous would have different experiences on the day of Gods judgment. The faithful would need to continue the life of faithfulness to God to experience healing and renewal in their life on that day. Faithful believers of God through the ages have believed that on the day of judgment their names would be found in the book of life (Rev. 20:11-15).     There are two messengers in tis verse. The first is usually understood to be John the Baptist (Matthew 11:10: Luke 7:27). The second messenger is Jesus, the Messiah, for whom both Malachi and John the Baptist prepared the way. (see 3:1). They challenge us to be messengers of the Lord as we wait for His second coming.

Conclusions:                                               1. The Dispute: Malachi 2:173:5, Malachi lived more than 400 years before Christ (ca. 432 BC) at a time of great moral decline 1) Malachi condemned sin and called people to return to God. He moves to the promise of a messenger (3:1). Also speaks of the messenger of the covenant, who is Jesus Christ. God promised to send a redeemer.    2) John the Baptist pointed people to the good news of Jesus first coming. It is important for us to realize that God is just as concerned with the purity of those within the body of Christ (the church) as He is with those outside the body of Christ (the world).

  1. Hope for the faithful: Malachi 3:164:5,  Malachis words not only include accusation (testimony) of misdeeds and judgment on the arrogant, but also a promise of compassion for those that fear and honor God. Loving reverence may well describe those whom God the Father receives as children. Arrogance (as a kind of reverence for oneself) then clearly defines the wicked who reject God and receive due punishment.

Malachis closing contrast in 4:1-5 is a contrast of living with reverence and healing. Yet the vision also includes a covenantal understanding to this new-found freedom based on Gods covenant with Moses, a kind of disciplined freedom of returning to a committed relationship with God.

Question:

In what ways am I living in preparation for Christs second coming?

Close in prayer, thanking God for His love and patience.

Sessions 1-5 are written by Dean Blevins Dean is professor of Practical Theology and Christian Discipleship at Nazarene Theological Seminary.
